Escaping the Fallacy of Being "In Control"

In a world filled with uncertainties and complexities, many of us strive to maintain a sense of control over our lives. We believe that by being in control, we can navigate through challenges, conquer our fears, and ultimately achieve happiness and success. However, as a life coach who has experienced her own struggles and triumphs and witnessed those of my clients, I have come to realise the fallacy of this pursuit. In this blog post, I will explore the illusion of 'feeling in control' and how allowing a different perspective can lead to greater peace and fulfilment.

The Deceptive Power of Control

We often associate control with power and security, believing that if we can exert enough influence over our circumstances, we can shape our lives according to our desires. However, the truth is that control is nothing more than a seemingly reassuring illusion. Life has a way of throwing unexpected curveballs our way, reminding us that we are not always in the driving seat. Whether it's a sudden job loss, a relationship breakdown, or a global crisis, we are reminded that external factors are beyond our control.

Unhelpful Thoughts

Our desire for control often manifests in unhelpful (or wonky) thoughts that limit our potential and hinder our personal growth. We may find ourselves constantly striving for perfection, fearing failure, or obsessing over future outcomes. These thoughts can paralyse us, preventing us from taking risks, embracing change, and living authentically. As a life coach, my role is to help my clients recognise these unhelpful thoughts for what they are and guide them towards more empowering perspectives.

Example Situations

Career Transitions

When people are contemplating a career change far too often they are held back by the fear of the unknown. They may be trapped in a job they dislike, longing for something more fulfilling, but unable to make a move due to the fear of losing control over their financial stability. By reframing their perspective, we can explore the potential for growth and new opportunities that lie within a career transition. We discuss the importance of embracing uncertainty, adapting to change, and trusting in their own abilities to navigate the unknown.

Relationship Challenges

When someone is struggling with a difficult relationship, they may be desperately trying to control the actions and behaviours of their partner, believing that it will bring them happiness and security. Realising that this never really works, it’s important for them to focus on their own emotional well-being and fostering healthy communication. By letting go of the need to control others, we can create space for personal growth and cultivate healthier connections.

Parenting Pressures

Many parents feel an overwhelming desire to control most aspects of their children's lives, believing that it will ensure their success and happiness. They may meticulously plan their children's schedules, micromanage their activities, and strive for perfection in their upbringing. They may even try to control their experiences so that they don’t have to feel negative emotions. However, this pursuit of control can create immense pressure on both the parents and the children. As a life coach, I guide parents towards a more balanced approach, emphasising the importance of fostering independence, resilience, and open communication with their children. By relinquishing excessive control, parents can create a nurturing environment that allows their children to explore their own interests, make mistakes, and grow into confident individuals.

Shifting Perspectives

Instead of fixating on control, I encourage my clients to shift their perspectives towards acceptance and resilience. An essential aspect of finding peace amidst the fallacy of control is cultivating inner awareness. By becoming more attuned to our thoughts and emotions, we can recognise when we are grasping for control and gently guide ourselves back to a more grounded state. This process involves mindfulness practices, self-reflection, and embracing self-compassion.
